One of the most exciting tournaments in the cricket world is here to entertain the fans again. Well, especially for Asian fans, as the Asia Cup 2023 is just around the corner. Who would have imagined that the fans will get to see the Asian teams compete twice in two years?

Last year we had the tournament in the T20 format which took place in the United Arab Emirates. One can say that it is a ritual tournament before any World Cup competition. There was a T20 World Cup 2022 just after the Asia Cup 2022. And now, it’s the biggest ICC event, Cricket World Cup 2023, just after the Asia Cup 2023.

It is the only occasion where the arch-rivals India and Pakistan meet each other except the ICC tournaments. And the fans cannot keep calm as the biggest rivalry will get a platform to face each other in the month of September.

In March 2023, it was proposed that Pakistan continue to host all India matches, including at least two India-Pakistan contests, at a neutral venue yet to be determined. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh rejected Pakistan’s hybrid model. Najam Sethi, Chairman of the PCB, responded by proposing two options. The first option was for India to play all of their matches at a neutral venue, while Pakistan hosted the remaining teams. The second option was for four group stage matches to be played in Pakistan, while the second phase, which included matches played by the Indian team, followed by next stage matches, including the final, was to be played at a neutral venue. The second option was agreed upon by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Hosts

For the Asia Cup 2023, Pakistan was chosen as the host of the tournament. But as we all know that India would not travel to Pakistan due to security and political reasons. The Asia Cup 2023 will kick off in Pakistan and will work as a hybrid model. Four games will take place in Pakistan, while the remaining nine will happen in Sri Lanka.

There were a lot of rumors regarding the venues as India denied to visit Pakistan. PCB never seems to be understandable about the same. PCB also made a statement that they would not travel to India for the World Cup.

But Pakistan could not afford to have Asia Cup without India participating because, as the hosts they would incur losses. India vs Pakistan is the contest that helps a board gain huge profits.

Teams

India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are the five full members of the ACC. The sixth team, Nepal, will join the full-time members as they won the qualifiers.

Format

The Asia Cup 2023 will be played in a 50-over format. The six teams are divided into two groups of three each. Each team will play two matches in the group stage. The tournament will head to the Super Fours. The top two teams from each group will move to the Super Fours. The four teams will get to play each opponent once. These six matches will result in the top two teams, who will move on to play the final.

Groups

India and Pakistan are always placed in the same group, as people get to see their clash two times and maybe three if they reach the final. So here are the two groups:

Group A: India, Pakistan, and Nepal

Group B: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan

What Happened in the Asia Cup 2022?

One can say the Asia Cup 2022 was probably the best one, as neither India nor Pakistan, but Sri Lanka managed to win the trophy. India was eliminated after losing against Sri Lanka in the Super Fours. Sri Lanka was the most dominant as they won the tournament defeating Pakistan in the Final.

India vs Pakistan- The Most Famous Game of the Asia Cup

This is the only contest people from all over the world watch the Asia Cup. India and Pakistan will play each other twice and maybe even thrice in this edition of the Asia Cup.

The last time both teams met, it was one of the best matches in the history of cricket. It was the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, and India were chasing a not-so-high total. Pakistan kept taking wickets, but Kohli was standing on the other end. In the 19th over against Haris Rauf, Virat smashed two sixes on the last two deliveries. Then it was 16 left off 6 with a spinner to bowl, and India won it.

It is sure that when these two teams play each other, fans will get a thriller to watch. With a World Cup scheduled later in the year, the fans couldn’t be happier about their face-offs.
