After much controversy, the much-awaited cricket match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is set to take place on October 14th. As tensions between the two countries have risen in recent months. This match promises to be a display of sporting spirit and national pride. The match will be held at the biggest stadium in the world, Narendra Modi Stadium. Let’s take a look at the history, controversies, and expectations surrounding this historic event.

India and Pakistan share an intense level of competency in the cricket world. There have been some disagreements between the governments in the past.  So, India has denied to tour Pakistan or even play against Pakistan except for the tournaments. Pakistan last came to India for the T20 World Cup in 2016.

The Indian government has come to an agreement with the BCCI that the Indian team will neither tour Pakistan nor play a bilateral series against them. This is majorly due to security reasons.

The Asia Cup 2023 was scheduled to happen in Pakistan, but India refused to visit. This became a huge controversy for the Pakistan Cricket Board. In return, there were rumours that Pakistan will not come to India to play in the World Cup 2023.

There were even rumours about Pakistan playing its matches in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, but it seems like none of them was true. India and Pakistan are the one clash the whole world waits for. It is not just a game of bat and ball but a lot more than that.

India has been loud and clear that they will not go to Pakistan no matter what. But Pakistan Cricket Board always creates a big deal out of it which results in a lot of rumours.

When these two countries do play, as most recently during last year’s T20 World Cup in front of 90,000 fans in Melbourne, the scenes were unbelievable. Even the Indian players said that they wouldn’t have won if the fans were not there. They both have been playing at a neutral venue since Pakistan last toured India in 2012.

Due to political differences, the neighbours no longer play each other in bilaterals, with contests between India and Pakistan limited to official International Cricket Council events.

The relations between India and Pakistan are so strained that the Pakistan players are not even allowed to play in the world’s biggest T20 franchise event, Indian Premier League. It was only in 2008 that the Pakistani players contested in the IPL.

Last Encounter between India and Pakistan

Both of the arch-rivals have been playing each other for the last couple of years due to the ICC tournaments. The last time India faced Pakistan was in Melbourne for the T20 World Cup.

It was not just a match but an emotion for the Indian fans, as it was nearly impossible for India to win the match. Virat Kohli, the chase master, played a vital role in India’s victory. And who can forget those two sixes against Haris Rauf? It still gives goosebumps to each and every Indian whenever one hears Harsha Bhogle saying “Kohli goes down the ground…”.

Also, Pakistan has now beaten India once in the ICC event, and this victory came in T20 World Cup 2021. With both teams having high-calibre players, the upcoming World Cup match will be a treat to watch with over one lakh fans in the stadium.

Before the World Cup, they will face off against each other in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. The tournament will kick off in Pakistan, and the rest of the games will be played in Dubai.

More than half of the revenue of the Asia Cup comes from the clashes between them. So if India could have boycotted the tournament, Pakistan Cricket Board will have had to bear losses when they can earn huge profits as the hosts.

What can you expect?

If you are a cricket fan, you don’t need to be told what can you expect from a clash between India and Pakistan. If anyone of you will be watching from the stands of the stadium, consider yourself the luckiest in the world. Because you will be having once in a lifetime experience.

Rohit Sharma and the company have an upper hand over the men in green. But you cannot underestimate the likes of Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Shadab Khan. India has lost just one game in ICC events against Pakistan. They are yet to be defeated in the ODI World Cup.

Well, controversies happen every time due to political or security reasons, but cricket never stops. Both countries are keen to play against each other. They are always pumped because of the magnitude of the particular clash. Hoping for a cracker of a game yet again.
