Home » India vs Bangladesh Head-to-Head Stats in Asia Cup

The Asian Cricket Teams don’t have much quality left in recent times. Only India is the team who is doing well consistently and is considered one of the big teams in Asia along with Pakistan. Sri Lanka is going through the transition phase and Afghanistan has just started to do well in the last few years or so. But one team who has grown up over the years is Bangladesh. They have done really well in the last 10 years or so in limited-overs cricket. Today, we will talk about the rivalry of India vs Bangladesh, the two Asian teams. We will see the Asia Cup head-to-head records between the two teams, overall records, etc.

Team India dominated Asia

The Indian Cricket Team is considered one of the best teams not just in Asia, but in world cricket. They dominated Asia in the last 20 years or so and have done well against all the other Asian teams. As far as the Asia Cup are concerned, they won the most titles (7) in the history of the tournament. Sri Lanka won 6 titles while Pakistan won 2 titles.

Clearly, India is one of the giants of Asian Cricket.

Bangladesh has grown over the years

Although Bangladesh hasn’t won any Asia Cup, they have grown up as a team over the last 10 years. Particularly in limited overs cricket, and more particularly in ODI cricket, they have done exceedingly well.

They managed to win two series against India at home (2015 and 2022). Bangladesh also won a series against big teams like Pakistan, South Africa (both home and away). So we can see they are progressing as far as ODI cricket is concerned.

India vs Bangladesh rivalry

As far as India vs Bangladesh rivalry is concerned, India has dominated Bangladesh overall in all formats. But today we are only talking about the ODI format.

In ODIs, we have seen 39 India vs Bangladesh games. Out of which, India has won 31 games while Bangladesh only managed to win 7 games. One game ended with no result. Clearly, India has dominated Bangladesh in ODIs.

Not the case in the last few years

Bangladesh has given a very tough fight to Team India over the last few years. Whether it is ODIs or T20Is, we have seen some close encounters between India and Bangladesh.

If we gave a few examples, in 2016, when Bangladesh needed only 2 runs to win 3 balls. But they missed out on the opportunity to win as they lost three wickets on the last 3 balls. They almost gave a scare to Team India. If India lost that game, they could have been out of the ICC T20 WC 2016.

Another example is the Asia Cup 2018 Final when India won the game on the last ball while chasing a small total of 223.

India vs Bangladesh Head to Head in Asia Cup history:-

ODI Format

In the ODI Format Asia Cups, India and Bangladesh faced each other 12 times. India has won 11 matches and Bangladesh only managed to win one game in 2012.

Bangladesh won the only game in Asia Cup 2012 when they chase down a target of 290. Almost all the Bangladeshi batters contributed and they won the match with 5 wickets and 4 balls left. Shakib ul Hasan becomes the man of the match for his 49 off 31 balls. Also, in the same match, Sachin Tendulkar scored his 100th international hundred in the first inning. But that was not enough to win a game for Team India.

T20I format

The Asia Cup was held in T20I format two times (2016 and 2022). The two teams didn’t face each other in 2022. In 2016, India won two games against Bangladesh (one Group Stage and a final) by 45 runs and 8 wickets respectively.

Last India vs Bangladesh in Asia Cup

Last India vs Bangladesh game in the Asia Cup happened in 2018. That game we discussed earlier in this article. It was the final of the Asia Cup and Bangladesh put 222 on the board in the first inning. Litton Das scored an outstanding hundred.

But the bowlers made this target looks very difficult for Indian batters. India won that game by 3 wickets on the very last ball of the match. Kedar Jadhav, after retiring due to a hamstring injury, came out again to bat and hit that winning run.

Clearly, India dominated Bangladesh in Asia Cup history. But Bangladesh has done well to get Team India on the edge over the last few years. Let’s see if they face each other in the Asia Cup 2023.
