IPL 2008:

The Inaugural Season- The first season of IPL in 2008 saw a total of 622 sixes hit in 59 matches played. The top three batsmen who hit the most sixes during this season were Sanath Jayasuriya, Shaun Marsh, and Yusuf Pathan, with 31, 26, and 25 sixes respectively.

IPL 2009:

South Africa did host the Tournament In 2009, due to the general elections in India. Thus, the IPL was held in South Africa. The season saw a total of 506 sixes hit in 59 matches played. Yes, a slight fall in top than in 2008. The top three batsmen who hit the most sixes during this season were Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, and Suresh Raina, with 29, 22, and 21 sixes respectively. Also, with top total sixes, Adam Gilchrist did hit three half-centuries in that season.

IPL 2010:

Chennai Super Kings Take the Title in the third season of IPL in 2010. We did see a total of 585 sixes hit in 60 matches played. The top three batsmen who hit the most sixes during this season were Robin Uthappa, Murali Vijay, and Yusuf Pathan with 27, 26, and 24 sixes respectively.

IPL 2011:

Chris Gayle’s Dominance did start in IPL 2011. The fourth season of IPL in 2011 saw a total of 639 sixes hit in 74 matches played. Chris Gayle emerged as the leading six-hitter of the season, hitting a total of 44 sixes in just 12 matches played. Also, he did hit 2 centuries and 3 half centuries in IPL 2011. The second and third positions were held by MS Dhoni and Shaun Marsh. The top sixes of both were 23 and 20 respectively.

IPL 2012:

Cris Gayle’s another Record-Breaking Season. The fifth season of IPL in 2012 saw a total of 731 sixes hit in a total of 76 matches. Chris Gayle once again emerged as the leading six-hitter of the season. He did hit a record-breaking 59 sixes in just 14 innings he played. The second and third positions were held by Kevin Pieterson and Cameron White, with 20 and 20 sixes each.

IPL 2013:

Mumbai Indians Take the Title in IPL 2013. The sixth season of IPL in 2013 saw a total of 672 sixes hit in 76 matches played. The top three batsmen who hit the most sixes during this season were Chris Gayle, Kieren Pollard, and Rohit Sharma with 51, 29, and 28 sixes respectively. Yet, another season of Chris Gayle entertaining the fans with top total sixes.

IPL 2014-2020: The Middle Years

The middle years of the IPL, from 2014 to 2020, saw a total of 5,139 sixes hit. The overall number of sixes hit during these six seasons increased significantly compared to the earlier years.

Glenn Maxwell with 36 sixes, was the top total sixes hitter in 2014. In 2015 again, Chris Gayle did lead the list with 38 sixes. In the subsequent season, IPL 2016, King Kohli was the highest scorer. And, the top total sixes that season were 38 by Virat Kohli.

Next, in 2017, with 26 sixes Glenn Maxwell and David Warner were on the top. The only difference between both was the number of innings both played. Maxwell did play 13 innings, and Warner 14.

Rishab Pant in IPL 2018, did hit a total of 37 sixes. And in 2019, Andre Russel did hit the maximum number of sixes, that is 52. And Mumbai Indians’ Ishan Kishan did hit the top total sixes with 30 in total in IPL 2020.

IPL 2021-2023: The Recent Years

The most recent seasons of IPL, from 2021 and 2022, have been played with limited audiences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the players have continued to entertain and hit a considerable number of sixes. In the 2021 season, a total of 687 sixes were hit in 60 matches played. KL Rahul did lead the list of top total sixes with 30 sixes.

And in IPL 2022, Jos Butler did hit a total of 45 sixes. Those were the most in that season. Also, it is impressive to know that the total number of sixes hit in IPL 2022 was 1062.

Now, as we are in the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League. So far, Faf Du Plessis is leading with 28 sixes in just 9 matches. And, we are definitely going to see many more of those big shots.
