It is the most eventful year in the cricket world. WTC Final and the Ashes are done but we are still left with the Asia Cup and Cricket World Cup 2023. After four long years, the ODI World Cup 2023 is set to take place in India. It will be an advantage for the Asian teams as they will get to play in a tournament before the big event.

While all other teams look settled, the Bangladesh team was still searching for a captain a few days back. There were many questions in the camp of Bangladesh due to the injury of Tamim Iqbal. Now, Shakib Al Hasan is to captain the Bangladesh team in the upcoming Asia Cup and the World Cup.

Complications in the board

A few months back, Tamim Iqbal, the captain of the Bangladesh team in ODI format announced retirement from international cricket. There must be something within the board, as no captain would retire before a big event like a World Cup.

Later, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister intervened and asked Tamim to come back from retirement for the World Cup. After a few days, there was his return announcement but then he stepped down as the captain and was also ruled out of the Asia Cup due to an injury.

In the last decade, there were many captains for the Bangladesh team. Shakib, Mushfiqur, Mortaza, Liton, and Mahamadullah, all of these players were the captains of the Tigers in the last few years.

When Tamim was ruled out from the series against India, Liton took charge to replace him as the ODI captain. And even now, when Tamim announced retirement, it was Liton who captained the team against Afghanistan.

Everyone thought Liton would lead the side for the upcoming Asia Cup and the World Cup, but Bangladesh named the former captain, Shakib Al Hasan as their new captain in upcoming big events.

Shakib Al Hasan- The Captain

One can say that Shakib is the most successful player Bangladesh has ever produced. Not just Bangladesh, but Shakib is one of the best all-rounders in the cricket world. He is currently at the top spot in the ICC T20I rankings.

After the left-hander, Tamim Iqbal stepped down from captaincy, Bangladesh Cricket Board announced Shakib as the captain for the upcoming important tournaments. BCB said that Shakib was the automatic choice for a captain when the place went vacant. As the all-rounder has captained Bangladesh many times throughout his career.

Shakib al Hasan, Bangladesh’s brand-new ODI captain, sees the position as a chance to show the rest of the world how superior they are. The star all-around player claimed that even with the added responsibility of captaincy, he is not new to the position.

In the LPL match, Shakib said, “It is nothing new to me. It’s a great opportunity for us to do well in the World Cup. I think we are a very good team, and it is time to show everyone how good we are. It is a great challenge for our team to showcase how good we have become in the last four years.”

Between 2009 and 2011, when he first assumed the captaincy, Shakib also captained Bangladesh in 49 one-day internationals, winning 22 of them. Shakib’s employment was intermittent because he was essentially filling in for the frequently injured Mashrafe Mortaza. Later, Shakib took over for Mashrafe and led Bangladesh in three additional ODIs in 2015 and 2017. Shakib Al Hasan has captained Bangladesh in 50 ODIs, 19 Tests, and 39 T20 Internationals to date. His most recent ODI as captain was in 2017.

The Future of Bangladesh Cricket

With Tamim, Mushfiqur, and Shakib being the senior players, the upcoming World Cup might be their last ODI World Cup. The Tigers have already found some good young players who can take the team forward. Even Bangladesh won the series against the Indian team when Liton Das was captaining the team. With players like Liton Das, Towhid Hridoy, Mehidy Hasan, and Ebadot Hossain in the setup, the future of Bangladesh cricket seems promising. In the last Asia Cup, Sri Lanka became victorious and who knows that this time Shakib and company might lift the trophy.
