Virat Kohli becomes the first player to score seven centuries in the history of the IPL (Indian Premier League). He achieved this milestone in the last league stage of the IPL 2023 against Gujarat Titans (GT). With this, he has now scored the most centuries in IPL history till now.

Virat Kohli scored 101 off 61 balls with 13 fours and a six to help RCB post 197 on the board in the first inning. Although that was not enough for the team as GT won the game with 6 wickets and 5 balls to spare.

It was an important game for RCB as they needs to win that match to qualify for the playoffs. GT won the toss and elected to field first. RCB again started well with the bat as both the openers, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis added 62 runs in the first powerplay.

When Faf got out, Maxwell came in and played a few shots. But Rashid Khan got the better of him and at one stage, RCB was 85 for 3 in 9.1 overs.

Then, Virat Kohli and M Bracewell stitched a partnership of 47 for the 4th wicket. But again RCB lost two wickets in quick succession.

Virat Kohli was the lone warrior against GT

Virat Kohli fight Lonely and make sure that his team scored a good total. In the end, he and Anuj Rawat added an unbeaten 64 runs. The latter also played a cameo of 23 off 15 balls.

When GT came out to chase, they lost W Saha early in the inning. But Shubman Gill showed his class again and Vijay Shankar came in as an impact player and he partnered well with Gill.

Gill was playing his shots while Vijay Shankar was struggling to get going. But after some time, both the batters played their shots and the pair added 123 runs for the 2nd wicket.

After V Shankar’s wicket, GT lost some momentum in the inning. But Shubman Gill got the team over the line and RCB are now out of the IPL 2023.

Good signs for Team India

Virat Kohli’s inning of 101 went in vain. But it is a good sign for the Indian team that he is scoring runs. Team India is scheduled to play an all-important ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. And the team would want him to be in touch. Runs under the belt will give Virat Kohli much-needed confidence.

Also, it’s a WC year as well. So Virat scoring runs is good for the Indian Team.

Virat matched the record of Chris Gayle in the last match

Before this game, Virat Kohli has equaled the record of 6 centuries in the IPL of his former RCB teammate Chris Gayle. Against SRH, Virat scored his 6th IPL century in the 2nd last league stage game of IPL 2023.

SRH batted first and with the help of Heinrich Klaasen, they managed to score 186 in the first inning. The inning played by the South African was a class apart and AB de Villiers also appreciated his inning via Twitter.

But the RCB openers made a mockery of this run chase and added 172 runs for the first wicket in 17.5 overs. Virat Kohli scored his 6th century in the IPL and equaled the record of Chris Gayle. RCB won that game by 8 wickets and makes sure that they were still in the hunt for the playoffs.

Virat has done well in the IPL 2023 and scored 639 runs in the 14 games. His average was 53.25 and a strike rate of 139.82. He scored 6 fifties and 2 hundreds in the IPL 2023.

It’s the first time that Virat Kohli has gone past 600+ runs in the IPL after 2016. How can we forget his breakthrough year of 2016, where he scored 973 runs and scored 4 centuries?

In 237 matches in the IPL till now, he scored 7263 runs with an average of 37.25 and a strike rate of 130. He has scored 50 half-centuries and 7 hundred in that period.

Other than Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle has scored 6 centuries in the IPL. Jos Buttler has also scored 4 centuries in the IPL. All 4 centuries came last year in IPL 2022.

KL Rahul, David Warner, and Shane Watson are the ones who scored 4 centuries each in IPL history.
